What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a tool we learn to notice and become aware of thoughts as they arise so we can return to the present moment. This is important because we spend on average 75% of our day lost in thought (whether we notice it or not) and the majority of our thoughts are not useful or negative and is the principal cause of anxiety. Learning the fundamentals of Mindfulness arms us with a tool we can use throughout the day when things get difficult and cause anxiety.

How to practice Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the skill of observation - noticing thoughts so that we can be aware of them and so that we can do something about it. The best way to find out what it is, is to give it a go. The guided meditation below is an easy to follow introduction that contains the tips and guidance you need to begin your practice.

Why is Mindfulness Important?

Mindfulness helps to reduce the amount of time that we are stressed or feeling anxiety.   We cannot always remove our anxieties, but we can learn to reduce the (%) amount of the day we suffer - allowing us to enjoy the journey.  It is important to remember that we spend most of the day as a passenger to our thoughts - Mindfulness helps to snap out of our ‘zombie’ mode and back into the present.

Where and when?

Mindfulness is a tool that we sharpen on a daily bases - We recommend a formal practice of about 15-20 mins/day. The reason we practice our ‘wax-on, wax-off ‘technique, is so we can draw from it throughout the day when the pressure is on and our thoughts are negative and not helpful. Imagine if you will, the daily ‘formal practice’ is like your drills and technique in the gym. Throughout the rest of the day, we use the techniques to help fight our thoughts. As Jon Kabat-Zinn says, ‘Life is the meditation’
